Beyond organic: Grocery shoppers seek the personal touch from local farmers
Shannon Ward and Elaine Pruitt went out to buy milk last month. So they cleared a day on their calendars. They lined up a baby sitter for four of their combined six children. Then they drove more than four hours — about 250 miles round trip — from Charlotte to Happy Cow Creamery in Pelzer. All for milk? Not really. Or at least, not just for milk. A small earthquake is shaking up food in America. Fueled by books like Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," local food is propelling people out to the farms. Some are forming buying clubs and co-ops to bring food back. Others are pooling with friends to share rides and ideals. "It's not so much about food as it is about forming an intentional community," Pruitt said.
Grocery delivery gets fresh start thanks to Amazon
Has enough time passed since the sensational demise of Webvan.com and its Web-to-doorstep grocery delivery peers for another company to try again? Amazon.com Inc. sure hopes so. The Web retailer quietly began taking orders for fresh produce and other grocery items this week from residents of Mercer Island and dispatched a fleet of 12 delivery trucks from its grocery distribution center in nearby Bellevue to deliver those alfalfa sprouts and acorn squash in one-hour time slots. Craig Berman, an Amazon spokesman, said the company is working with local wholesalers and farmers and aiming to have inventory sit in the warehouse for less than 24 hours. The new Web site, fresh.amazon.com, was first available to a small number of Amazon grocery customers on Mercer Island who were invited by e-mail to help test the business.
